Hello again everyone...hope you are all well!
Back at the beginning of summer, when I started using my truck full-time for towing our RV, my wife would notice a bit of a whooshing sound coming from the engine area.
At first I dismissed it as probably the A/C compressor coming on and off, but since the weather's been getting cooler, I haven't been using A/C yet there is still this sound every now and then.
It sounds like a fan starting up...runs for a second or two and then stops. This will happen on and off throughout our ride (wherever we're going) but doesn't seem to follow any rhythm or interval.
Am I losing my mind or is this normal? What could it be?
The engine fan can come on briefly when cold. (I know - it's counter intuitive... ) It has to do with the wax in the sensor being so cold it will lock up the fan drive briefly until it warms a bit. However, it does not affect the engine warm-up, because the thermostat is still closed so the air coming over the radiator isn't cooling the engine yet.
It doesn't sound like the engine fan...something smaller...and this occurs while driving (or while stopped), after the engine is already at operating temperature.
I suspect that some form of defrost might be happening, although I can't see it in July...but you never know,,,people start fiddling with the controls.
An older GM truck that I owned 4 trucks ago, would cycle the compressor whenever the defrost was used...could this be the same thing?
I ended up disconnecting the wiring on that compressor because I could't see this doing any good....other than to wear out the compressor prematurely.
The compressor always runs with the defroster, in modern vehicles (having AC). This is to dry out the air being pushed up to the windshield.
I've got into my wife's car and found the defroster set to "on" in summer, and she's got the windows down!
