Engine straining noise
Been meaning to post this question for years... Anyway, I have a 2006 F250 with the 6.0 PS engine. Sometimes when I am accelerating, usually with the air conditioner on, the engine sounds like it is straining its guts out. This is usually while climbing, even slightly, although it will do it on flat land too, from a stop or on the freeway. The engine can be cold or warm when it does it. Not a jackrabbit start or towing anything either. It will stop after a moment, and the engine will sound normal again. Doesn't happen on a constant basis either.
What is the engine doing, and is there a way to make it not do that?

You need to get a monitor, like a bluetooth and TorqPro App. Without information on what is happening real time, it's all guess work. this could be any number of things, including FICM, injectors, etc. Get data then you can start to diagnose.

Can you describe the sound more? Straining its guts out could be reving up more than you think it should? or the fan coming on that Mark mentions (sounds like an airplane prop under your hood). A noise I will notice is when the engine is lugging, usually on light throttle - I get a groaning sort of noise/vibration, but it usually is just before it downshifts...
