When mine did that, it was a bad EBP sensor. Put a new one in and it quit popping and pumping black smoke.
Same here. New EBP sensor solved it. I was going down interstate when it happened, nursed it home with the turbo farting any time I gave it too much throttle. I cleaned the tube, installed a new EBP and problem solved.

Do you have any sensor data before and after replacement? It's a cheapish part and may throw a new one on there just to check it off the list
I have. No change. I have also tried unplugging MAP, EGR and MAF and I have no change in how the boost reacts. I brought my compression adapter with me but forgot my gauge. I will be doing that next weekend I suppose. The truck is 2hrs from me and I'm only able to work on it on the weekends.
Little update. I pulled the valve cover again as I get a cylinder 5 contribution fault that won't go away. I get in there and see nothing wrong with cylinder 5. I only removed the oil rail. Push rods and rockers look okay. However I have a broken rocker arm retainer on cylinder 3 intake rocker arm. Any way that this is causing the issue?
Only thing I do not understand is why the cylinder 5 fault...
I would slowly crank the engine over and measure the full cycle of the lifter heights to make sure that the lifter isn't collapsed or the camshaft isn't flattened out. Have you checked the compression?

I kinda said hell with the engine as it had 305k on it and I had another cab and engine to throw at it. I was just curious at what actually happened when I pulled the cab. I bought a compression tester to further diagnose, but lost interest and need to get it back on the road. So now, in conclusion, I have no idea what actually happened.
