I have a leaking head gasket on my 1990 302. I was just wondering how big of a job it is to remove the head, well I know that it is a big pain in the ##### job, I am mainly worried about how hard it is to pull off once it is unbolted. Should one person be able to lift it off no problem or does it take a little more muscle than that?
Hi, just get your self a repair manual and it will tell you exactly how to do it and it will be heavy when you try to take it out of there yourself but can be done it feels heavier than it is because of reaching down inside to get it. John
Rig up a steel pipe or wood 2by4 with a chain bolted around the center. Bolt it to the center of the head and have one person on each side lift. In the past I lifted some very heavy heads ( Ford, Packard & Studebaker)V8 by my self.

Before you get into the actual removal of everything make sure you go buy a quality socket set. When you start removing the head you will be glad you did. The head actually isn't that heavy for one person getting it off. Rig up a device to act like handles for the job. Plan on an all day event and an extra day for problems encountered during the removal and reinstall.
I have done a few head gaskets on 302's and besides a few scraped knuckles and some sweat it all went smooth. Good luck....
removing the head can be a big job. especially on a efi truck before you remove the head you must remove the intake which can be a hassle with the fuel lines and wiring harness around this. Try not to disconnect to much. also make sure to keep your pushrods in order and put them back in where they came out they dont alway ware the same.heads are not to heavy just make sure to take them right out and not to set them on anything that might damage the surface. And most important have fun
