I am looking at purchasing a 1988-1992 Ford F250 or 350 pickup to tow my boat. What are the towing capacities of these trucks w/ the 460? What is the HP and torque figures for this motor?
Unless you are towing something really big, I agree, the 460 will handle most loads just fine. I tow a 30 foot trailer whose dry weight is over 8,000 pounds just fine and most hills don't even make it kick down to 3rd.
Usually the limitations have more to do with the frame, axles and springs. Most magazines say that if you want to tow a heavy load(5,000 or more) regularly, then you should go with a 3/4t or full ton truck, they usually don't worry about the engine unless the load is really heavy. The heavier trucks usually have stronger axles, trannies and springs and normally have other things taken care of like coolers and bigger radiators. You are penalized however by the extra weight of those things so gas mileage can be poor. My 94 F250 4x4 supercab gets 12 mpg on a good day, no load. But then it drops only to 9 or maybe 8mpg on a bad day with a heavy load.
I would recommend a tranny cooler if you have an auto. A good hitch and sway bars for the hitch are highly recommended if you pull anything much heavier than say 2,000.
Torque is between 390 and 400 ftlbs. However it is important to note that the 460 makes this torque at 2200 rpm as opposed to the 3000 rpm of newer motors.
