Question Speedometer is off, how to fix?

2013 F350 DRW 2wd Diesel, 18,600 miles. Used exclusively to tow 5th wheel.

Owned since new. No mods or changes, all original except shocks (Bilstein 4600).

Noticed for awhile people catching me on 2 lane roads. Finally checked against Waze that the speedometer is reading about 2 to 3 mph faster than actual. Car on Waze appears to be dead on.

I have Ford extended warranty but I doubt it is covered. Is this something dealers can test and correct? Or can I correct somehow?

Thanks.

I can't answer on your 13, but on my 95 the dealer could reset up to 8 times to change for tire size. 13 would be way more advanced, think it should be easy for dealer. Check owners manual.

2-3 mph fast is normal for these trucks. The PCM does record actual speed so your odometer is reading accurately. Why Ford does this I have no idea.

I apologize for getting off topic but I can't help but ask, what is Waze?

Just use ForScan and adjust the tire size until you get the speedometer in alignment with a GPS of your choice.

My 13 was the same way, the speedo read 3 or so MPH high at any speed which to my tiny brain indicates the tire size is too small (more revolutions of the wheel at a given speed). I increased the tire diameter to 2718mm and it agrees with the GPS now.

Here's some info (yes, they're talking about a Mustang but the same principal applies). .

My 2013 F350 has the same problem, it's 2 mph off but I checked the odometer with a gps over 250 miles and it's right on. I've also noticed the its off all the way through the speed ranges the same amount so it's in the indicator placement.

Like many/most GPS apps it will show you your true GPS speed.

2013 4x2 DRW F350 and 2016 4x4 DRW F350 - both read about 2-3 mph higher on the speedo than actual speed (as checked against various roadside radar units, Waze and other GPS-powered speedos). Always wondered about that.

I track my mileage between stops when pulling my RV and the odometer miles and a Google maps route for the same endpoints are usually within a mile (out of 300), so the odometer looks to be spot on as far as I can tell.

Thank you. The reason for my curiosity is I need a hand held device, preferably a smart phone, that will show actual speed in a situation such as on a small tractor that does not have a speedometer.

Now that we know that the speedometers have a error sure would be nice to have a fix.

Uhm, fix is in post #5. My wheel diameter was in 726-45-01, YMMV.

I would be very cautious making custom sized changes with Forscan to any value that is not a stock tire size. Some users have reported a check engine light illuminates as a result.

It's much easier and safer to set the cruise control 3mph faster. Also if you have an obd adapter and torque pro or forscan lite you can monitor the true speed from the VSS.

Changing the wheel diameter will throw off the odometer that's right on when checked with GPS, l need a way to reposition the needle.
