Had to replace (2) ignition coils on my last road trip, '03 E350 5.4l Auto, had to get them at NAPA (only $30). Has anyone used these and had good luck with them? I am thinking to replace all the coils at once now that I am home and would buy more of these if they are decent (they were great in a pinch! got me back on the road). I drove 1200 miles with these two in there and it drove just fine. I also bought an extra one in case I ran into trouble far from town so I need 5 more...
BTW Oreilly's had the same Bosch coil for close to $70 so its worth it to try to find a NAPA if you ever find yourself in that situation...
I've found Motorcraft DG-508's all over eBay and Amazon for just over $27 each. Like many others I've paid upwards for both NAPA and Motorcraft )from the dealer) for $50 each.
I don't know why you'd need more than what's already failed---I'm running two different E250's with 5-6 original COP's, each van with over 285K miles. If you're going to carry one or two extra and the existing COP's are working honestly there's no need to change them "just because".
If I had to bet. that is what I would bet I am dealing with. 10k miles ago I replaced all coils (on someone's recommendation) with Motorcrafts but 4 have failed so far. I think I paid $180 for (8) so I didn't think it was too good to be true BUT they did not come in factory packaging!
Are there any other scenarios that ruin coils or that mimic a bad coil that a new coil remedies? (that sound confusing but I think it makes sense) I only have 1500 miles on any of the replacements (Motorcraft or Bosch).
Surprised no one has any field report from buying/running the Bosch's, it was the easiest and most available version I could find in two different cities.
There are counterfeit Motorcraft coils out there, so be careful where you buy them. Lot's of counterfeit junk being sold on Amazon and eBay.
That's entirely possible AND there is another trick some eBay sellers use to lure in the unsuspecting or inexperienced buyers. They'll list package deals of Motorcraft plugs and coils for cheap--looking closely at the listing you'll see one or a few Motorcraft spark plugs but some no-name COP's. I almost got suckered in until I thought this is too good to be true so looked more until it hit me what they were up to.
Here's a link to an earlier post of mine discussing Motorcraft COP's: Motorcraft DG-208's
Buyer beware is a good watchword for dealing with eBay and lately Amazon.
