Potential van purchase

This should go under wheels and tires, please delete.

Hello. I've posted on here before but this is sort of a new question. I was originally looking for a beater cargo van because I'm always having to haul large items like furniture and it's hard to cram stuff into my 98 Chevrolet conversion van due to all the seats and stuff that's in it.

But have decided to look for something newer and sell my 2003 Subaru Baja I bought new. The Subaru is just not suiting my needs anymore. The main reason I held onto the car for so long was it has all wheel drive and need something to get me back and fourth to work (and up my driveway) when it snows. Although we don't get allot of snow here in East Tennessee. Oddly enough we got one snowstorm in 2018 which was a foot deep 2 weeks before Christmas and that was technically fall. Then no snow at all through the winter, just torrential rains.

I also got my Subaru stuck in my driveway and had to borrow my Dad's 2002 F-150 to get up and down my driveway due to the depth of the snow! So I kind of lost some faith in my Subaru.

My father just bought a 2016 Ford F-150 with all wheel drive and he's retired so he says if it snows I can drive it to work. And my wife also has an AWD Nissan I could use.

I thought about looking for a Ford 4X4 full size van which I didn't even know existed until a couple of years ago. Never seen one before. Problem is they did not sell these in the south. All the ones I found were sold up north and are rusted all to hell from road salt.

My 98 Chevrolet Express is 21 years old and is rust free!

So looks like I am in the market for a big A$$ cargo van as a daily driver personal vehicle! Since owning this 5.7 liter Chevrolet van which get's 9/15 mph, I'm use to crappy gas mileage.

Trouble is there are tons of vans to choose from. These vans seem to hold there value better than I thought. Passenger cars seem to take a hard hit on resale value.

I would prefer:

Ford E-series (although my Chevrolet 1500 Express has been good, I kind of swing toward Fords)
Short version (or not the extended version)
Something other than white
Not beat up
Not eat up with miles
Not allot of windows
Don't need a diesel (too much maintenance)
Don't need a E-350 1 ton chassis

So I've kind of narrowed it down to this one, although the mileage is a bit higher than what I wanted, it's in my price range:

https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used...ting=253343366

OK since this is going to be my personal vehicle, I'm wanting to customize it a bit but not tacky it up or alter it radically. I gotta change the wheels! One thing I have to take into consideration is whether it's an E-150 or an E-250 due to the 6 or 8 lug pattern. That might limit my wheel option.

I'm wanting to use this wheel:

https://www.ultrawheel.com/wheel/28/164/

Scroll down to the fourth line from the bottom. Part #: 164-7981P

It says this wheel is available in 17X9 with the 8 X 6.5" bolt pattern. However when I look to see if this wheel fits an E-250, their website says it does not. Why is that? Why wouldn't it work? I do know there is a weight rating on wheels. And since the E-250 is a 3/4 ton chassis, maybe these wheels are not rated for that amount of weight , yet they make it in an 8 lug Ford pattern. But could also have something to do with the offset.

Now this maybe assuming I using the stock tires. I would actually like to use a smaller profile tire something that equals the height of the stock 16" tire and wheel.

I could always swing by some of the local tire shops and find out. I think the one up the street is a dealer for this brand of wheel.

Just curious for the moment.

Have you checked any of the government sites? They will usually have a few 4x4 vans. Also depending on how much room you need an all wheel drive astro might work but they are getting hard to find.

It may just be the rim size as it wasn't a factory option so to the software it may look incompatible. Your best bet is to call or go see a local tire guy about fitment.

I did find a couple of red E-250s I'm going to look at. I emailed a guy on eBay selling these same wheels and he said there was no reason they shouldn't fit.

Later on I found this photo of an E-Series van with the same wheels I'm interested in. Although it looks like a 4X4 Quigley.

Then you probably don't need a 3/4 ton either because those are 90% of the capacity of a 1 ton. How much weight are you going to carry? These E250s ride really rough unloaded, they don't even start to ride nice until there is 1000-1500lbs in them. Driving one of these on a potholed or washboard dirt road is only possible at a crawl speed, try to go faster and it will dance itself right into the ditch. Maybe you should look for an E150.

A 9" wheel is WAY to wide. The front suspension design on these trucks with the radius arms back to the chassis means the turning radius is limited. The stock wheels are 6" wide and a 245/75R16 tire only just fits an E250, I put mudflaps on my van and the front tires actually touch them when turning sharply.. just to give you an idea. So while it won't be problem using a larger diameter wheel with a more low profile tire you will have to limit it to perhaps a 7" width and it will also need to have a zero offset like the stock wheels and be no larger in diameter than the stock tire.

Thanks for the advice, seriously though.

Dad used to have a 1999 F-350 15 passenger van back when he was in the dog show circuit to keep the miles off his 98 Chevy conversion van. I actually thought the E-350 road and handled much better than the 1/2 ton Chevrolet 1500 Express that I ended up buying from him a few years ago which I still own. They installed the conversion package on a 1/2 ton chassis and with all the extra weight, the handling was sloppy. I put a rear sway bar on it and it did wonders.

This is the wheel I was interested in for my van.

Not to dispute you but the internet says the stock rim on a 2013 E-250 is 16X7". That's what I was going by. They do make this type of rim in a 16X8" in this style though. Would that be too wide?

But if you say a 9" will scrub, then I don't want that.. Alcoa make a similar rim but it has a reversed dished style which I don't like . Looks like something that would go on a duelly.

I want to know now rather than finding out later. 20 years ago I picked out a set of 15" rims (forget the width) for my 68 Fairlane. Some goober at the tire store said I could put 15 60 series 235s on it. Well the suspension had so much travel to it even after installing new shocks and lowering springs, the front fenderwells sliced the sidewalls. I ended up buying some used 195s just to see if they would work and put the car through it's paces. So I ended up buying a new set of 15" 60 series 195s. These don't scrub even lowered 4".

Being the packrat I am, I still own the car. It was my grandmothers.
