mushroomed steering shaft

With my impatience to get my column back together; and not waiting for help. I mushroomed the head of my steering shaft along with a broken piece of wood and 2 bruised knuckles. what would the fix be? File until close diameter and rethread? if so , any one know what the those are? I have to learn how to be more patient.

I'd carefully use a flap when on a grinder to taper the end of the shaft, (cutting off the mushroomed area) and use a sharp thread file to clean up the first two turns of thread. I have split thread dies in half, so they can be back threaded over damaged threads, but it is a delicate task and not everyone has the tools to do it. PM me if you want details though..

Maybe post a pic if you can so we get a better idea of the extent of damage. I have used a Dremel with a thin cutoff wheel to restore fine threads. Helps to have one of those magnifier headsets

Got it. Had the mechanic at work look at it, He ran his thread chaser on it and it was good as new in less than 5 minutes. Spindle thread was 5/8-18 if anyone needs to know. Thanks for your replies.
