Just got this new toy, and want to complete the change over from 2wd to 4wd. Got everything under this thing but the transfer case, front drive line and the manual shifter. I saw someone else was doing this to theirs and wanted to know if I have to replace the automatic transmission as well or if the transfer case will hook up to the existing transmission.
The transfer case will not bolt to the existing transmission.
To make your trans a 4x4 you need to replace the extension housing (an easy bolt on job) and the output shaft. To replace the output shaft you have to take EVERYTHING out of the trans, install the 4x4 output shaft, and put the whole transmission back together.
Once I plug the holes on the face plate of the transmission spline shaft, and get a housing adapter, cant I just cut the shaft flush with the end of the new adapter housing? Any way, just a thought to bounce off everyone's head, trying to save from dropping the money for a transmission on top of the cost of the transfer case, and drive line. If this is the case, any suggestions on what would be the best transmission, and transfer case combination to go on my 6.8,
