I am fixing up a 1966 Mercury M100 with a 240 with 3sp on the tree. I bought a parts 1966 F100 which also has a I6. The previous owner was the original owners son which was great. The engine looks the same as my 240 but, the PO did not remember if it was ever changed or worked on. He thought it might be a 300. What is the measurement of the bore from top of block to top of piston at bottom of stroke. I have the head off already because the motor is stuck right now. It was free last year but well... it happens. I want to stay with a 240 so please help , send me the measurements. Thank you
If I suss this correctly, the only parts that are different between 240 and 300 would be the rotating assembly??
In other words, crank, rods and possibly pistons??
If so, easy-peasy change either way, methinks.
I'm with you on the keeping of the 240. Just got back from the junkyard, and if I wasn't paying attention, I was easily over 65-70 mph...
That's with a 3:50-1 gear, BTW.
The rotating assembly is different between 240/300. The cylinder head is also different on the 240. The combustion chamber is smaller which boosts compression a little. I think on the engine the cyl head looks the same as the 300. You would have to see the shape of the combustion chamber to know the difference. Valve size may also be different but I can't recall.
I read somewhere on this forum where a 300 bottom end mated with a 240 head with Chevy rocker arms really puts out some decent power. Nit sure if it's true as I hadn't done I but it sounds fun to try! More power is always fun right?
