Has anyone here mounted a winch on the rear of their truck? I was thinking about using it to pull larger logs and bring it with my while plowing in case I get in trouble. Can I just get a 2" receiver mount for a front mount and use it in the rear? What weight rating winch would be suitable to pull a 4k lbs truck, loaded with another 1k with plow, driver and sandbags over the rear axle through the snow?
Yes you can use a regular trailer hitch receiver on the rear and a winch mount that goes into it. The more winch the better but mostly go by your budget, just have a pulley block available so you can double the cable over if your winch wont pull the load straight.
From what you are describing, IDT you need just a whole lot of winch. I use a 2000 lb. winch on my trailer and it pulls trucks up on there without much strain at all, and that is on a straight line pull.
You can use a winch cradle in the receiver. Either a 9k or 12k lb winch should do it. Rule of thumb is you want at least 1.5x of the weight of the truck in winch capacity. Might have to run a double line pull if you get really buried with the 9k but not a big deal (get a ****** block, shackles, & tree saver straps so you have this option). Generally I wouldn't think you'll be stuck too terribly bad plowing though, so a smaller winch than typically recommended would likely do fine. You will need to run heavy gauge wire to the rear of the truck (2 gauge or better). I recommend something like this for a plug, so the winch is easily removable:
