Hello, first time poster here. I have been looking to purchase a newer truck for a while now and recently found a very nice 2014 f150 XLT with the 3.5 ecoboost and 71k miles. The truck seems to be in excellent shape and I drove about 2 hours this past weekend to the test drive it and it drove great. I was heavily leaning toward pulling the trigger on it so I pulled a Carfax on it. No accidents or anything, but the truck did spend the first 3 years of its life (2014-2017) in the Grand Rapids Michigan area. I know this is the heart of the rust belt and time spent up there is very hard on vehicles. How worried should I be? Are these trucks prone to rust? I didn’t think to crawl under the truck so I can’t say what the underbody looks like for sure. I may be able to get a picture or two. Thanks in advance.
Pay close attention to the rocker panel areas, especially if it's a SuperCab. Being a 2014, rust should start to show now. Look for scaling on the frame to, try to shine a light inside the frame to see if you can see any scale in there. Rust bubbles under the paint in the rocker panels and/or scaling on the frame would make me pass on it.
Are they prone to rust. I'd say they are better than the GMs of the same era. But winter use in the rust belt is bad on anything. I'd say it has more to do with how it was cared for. When I lived in Kansas, I washed my truck twice a week in the winter and never had more than a normal amount of surface rust on the suspension parts.
. . . and it also depends on how it was used as well. Did it slosh through 2" of salt-filled slush all winter or was it in a garage? Did it just play in deep snow or did it play on ice? Or some combination?
