So today driving to work my truck started knocking (?) and vibrating really bad. I almost stopped but was so close to work I finished the drive. Had a really high pinched rattle that happened when I let off the throttle and stayed there until back on the throttle. Limped it home and as I pulled in the drive it was magically gone.
First thought was a bent/broken rocker arm rod or a fubar injector. Anyone have an example of what those sound like?
Did a whole bunch of web searching and came up with this video that sounds similar.
anyone have any ideas? It is an 01 F250 with 264,500 miles on it. Pretty much stock under the hood except what I have in my signature.
Going to grab a rental car tomorrow until I can tear into it this weekend. To me it sounds like it is coming from the drivers side so I will probably pull the valve cover and start poking around.
anything specific that you think I should look for? No dummy light but will probably borrow a code reader tomorrow from work. Don’t have anything else to take readings so that sucks, but oh well.
Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions in advance.
So it ran bad then went back to normal? Sounds electrical. Check the underside of the 42 pin harness where it crosses the driver side valve cover to see if it has rubbed through. Could be an UVCH connector coming loose. If you pop the valve cover and it is inspect the pins in the connectors to make sure they are not burnt. Check for codes and see if you have any.
So I pulled the 42 pin connector apart. No chaffing of the wires. Ohmed out the injectors, all were about 4.2-4.3 with cylinder 2 at 3.9. So that leads me to believe that injectors aren’t the issue and wiring is good. UVCH plugs were tight and internals were clean. Guess I will be pulling valve covers tomorrow night and checking things out. Will probably verify all torques are good on injectors and rocker arms. Question is should I pull the arms off and check the rods for damage? Anything else I should check while I’m in there?
Almost every time somebody thinks something is bent in there, it's usually a loose screw, a corroded connector, or a plugged fuel pump intake. I haven't heard anything serious yet - take heart.
Mine did that once. Scared me to death. I thought it was the end of my 7.3. I think it was the UVCH plugs on one side. I had replaced the glow plugs a few weeks before. I wiggled and pushed extra hard on the plugs. It has not repeated the problem. That was 4 years ago.
So messing around with the truck tonight. I was getting ready to clean the engine so I could take off valve covers and decided to check the icp connection ( drivers side valve cover up by the HPOP?). Saw some electrical tape around it and remembered I had broke the clip many years ago when I was thinking about doing the icp resistor mod.
Anyway, pulled out the connector and it is full of oil. Could that be the culprit? I cleaned it out with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and am now waiting for it to dry. In the mean time went onto riff raff website and put the connector and icp in the cart. Will fire it up in the morning and see what happens. But want to hold off ordering if it isn’t the problem. Don’t want to drop $212 just for fun
