I just purchased a 2015 XLT f250 with 109k on it... noticed that when I was driving in town after driving 350 miles I got a message saying exhaust cleaning... does this mean the truck is in regen? Not sure what to do..
This should run about every 500 miles or so. The diesel particulate filter burns off excess carbon. It also seems to reduce MPG at about 2-3 mpg.
If it doesn't complete in one cycle because you were not running the vehicle long enough, the burn will continue at other intervals the next time you are on the road.

If the truck is regening when it's supposed to (going out closer to 500 miles) and not every 200 to 300 miles like some guys or even lower I've seen here, you will still get decent mileage when driving normally. Just daily driving, my last two fillups with a regen in between, hand calculated, 15.04 mpg and 15.93 mpg. It's all in the way the truck is used and if you are getting the DPF hot enough to passive regen some and going out close to 500 miles. A lot of stop and go driving along with idle time is not good for the filter or the mileage.
