My truck has around 5k miles on it. I've noticed that ever since the beginning of December when things got really cold around here that it hasn't been exhaust cleaning like it used to. I can't remember seeing the message all of December. I did a lot of highway driving and I even towed 10k in Dec. and it never cleaned that I saw.
So tonight it's about 18 degrees and I had do some city driving. I was on my way to the gas station with my dash saying "45 miles til empty" and the truck all of a sudden acts like it's running out of fuel. It hesitates and won't go over 25 MPH (this went on for 1/4 of a mile). Right when I was pulling into the station it flashed "cleaning exhaust filter."
I didn't want to pull back out without getting fuel so I went ahead and turned it off and filled up. After I left it was fine. I took it out on the highway to try and warm it up for a cleaning and it never cleaned in 30 miles.
Why would it try cleaning around town with lots of idleing when it hasn't even been cleaning on the highway?
I have a 400 mile round trip tomorrow and I may take one of my other trucks because I don't want any trouble.
Cleaning exhaust system sure does know when to pick a bad time to run.
I won't disagree with that.
Mine has caught me a few times less than a half mile from the office.
Although nothing a nice highway drive that evening doesn't fix.
How long is the normal "cleaning" cycle time? I have about 600 on the truck and only saw 1 at EXACTLY 250.0 miles and have not seen one since. I didn't note how long it ran for, but would be good to know so that I can drive around a bit to complete one if need be.

This is one of the reasons it is nice to have an OBD II scanner. I had the Edge Insight on my 6.4 and it was always very easy to see what the engine was doing. By watching the EGT and other exhaust temps I knew when the regen cycle was over. (Also when it started)
Getting one of these for the 6.7 is in my future and it will be nice to know what is really going on under the hood. I will also state that so far this 6.7 has me a lot less curious than I was with the 6.4 so I'm not in a real big hurry for answers on the regen/DPF/DEF and coolant temp. Just seems to be a smoother system and it's nice to not have this stuff on my mind all the time.

Will one of those scanners void your warranty? Or is just just a few extra set of gauges? When will one be out for our trucks?
An OBD II unit that is just picking up signal will not void your warranty. It does not intrude on the vehicle programming or make any changes whatsoever. Now, if you're dealer service dept. is really sensitive you may need to educate them on what it is that you have plugged in there and prove to them that it is not a tuner of any kind.
I don't know the status of the Edge Insight or any others like DashDaq for the '11 & up 6.7's. It's been a long time since I viewed their web sites. Might be available now but get your wallet out. They are kinda pricey.
On my 6.4 I had there were around 20 different vehicle parameters that I had the choice of monitoring while I drive. The screens typically allow you to monitor up to 8 things on one screen, or you can customize several screens. 1 for coolant/oil/trans temp, 2 for EGT and Regen status, 3 for calculated engine load/EGT's/Torque converter lock up. Possibilities are endless.
Edge Insight is just a scanner. It will not change any programming. I had an Insight on my 6.0 truck and it worked great. I will likely get one for the new truck. However, the new truck has not shown me any real reason to invest in one. In my experiences over 19000 miles, the DPF regeneration has been a total non-event. I can not even attempt a guess at how many DPF messages I have missed because there is not enough of a noticeable performance change to know when it regenerates. I have found that if you do see the message flash and select the Instant Mileage screen you will see a 2 to 3 mpg drop in fuel economy for about 10 minutes. After 10 minutes the mileage climbs right back up. I have seen some posts about a message about "Cleaning exhaust filter-drive until complete" but I have never seen this message. I drive my truck daily, city and highway. depending on where I need to go, Some days it goes 4 miles and others it goes hundreds. I quit worrying about DPF regeneration and DEF fillups 15000 miles ago. I just keep driving and smiling...Great truck...
