I recently found a good reason to turn off overdrive in my expedition. I am now towing a 4000+ pound camper. I have a hilly drive to the lake and towing is tough for the old girl. I press the OD off button on the shift lever. The od off light does come on. However, i feel nothing. The transmission is still shifting into overdrive. No engine braking either.
Does this seem like a button/wiring issue? Or more like a transmission problem? Anyone with similar issues maybe?
Yes. Pull column shrouds and inspect the little wiring harness that goes into the shift lever tube. Test the switch operation using a meter. Etc...
The button is an input into the PCM that tells it what you want so it can make the changes to the transmission. Sounds like your PCM isn't getting the input.

If the light comes on when the button is pushed does that mean that the button if functioning properly? Does the button turn the lamp on or does the pcm give this signal? Maybe someone could point me in the right direction for a wiring diagram.
The button is the input to the PCM. The PCM controls the bulb.
I'm not sure you've thought that one through. The PCM would have to get a signal from the OD switch in order to turn the bulb on, correct? I too would think that since the bulb is turning on then that means the PCM is receiving a signal from the switch and the issue should be from the PCM to the tranny.
The button completes a circuit to the PCM. When that circuit is complete the PCM cancels OD. When OD is cancelled all that happens is that the PCM does not tell the transmission to shift to overdrive.
Thanks for the help everyone! O have an Obd2 code reader (a cheap one) and I have scanned for codes with Forescan and did not see any codes. Would my check engine light come on with these codes or would i need a better scanner?
Forscan can read the transmission codes. A cheap code reader will not read transmission codes. The check engine light will come on with some transmission codes, but not all transmission codes.
Thanks again. I am going to do some more diagnostics with Forescan maybe I'm overlooking something. I have a mechanic buddy that thinks I am actually turning overdrive off and I am crazy. Maybe I am! We're going to do some driving and see what we think.
