Overdrive does not seem to be working when I am going downhill on the highway and push the overdrive. I expect the tranny to shift into overdrive and use the engine to slow down a bit vs. riding the brakes but instead the tach goes down to idle speed and the car seems to be coasting. If I engage the OD I can drive around no problem but going downhill it seems there is a problem.
Other than that the engine/transmission seems to be acting normally.
I think you're a little confused about Overdrive. OD will actually upshift the transmission and make it run at a lower RPM. If you shut off OD ( push the button and light comes on) It will down shift to 3RD gear and your RPM's will go up. OD is designed to increase fuel mileage be allowing the engine to run at a lower RPM thus using less fuel. When the light is off OD will automatically shift in .... If you push the button the light will come on and lock out the OD. Just keep in mind that OD will return to the ON position after starting the vehicle.... you will need to push the button to turn it back off.
Thanks, I understand the overdrive correctly I just didn't explain myself well.
I live in Colorado and frequently drive in the mountains. I dont mess with the OD button (turning off the OD - light comes on) unless I am on a long downhill and want to avoid riding the brakes any more than I have to. Therefore what I should have said was that now when I disengage the OD - push button and light comes on - it should downshift to 3rd, the engine should rev and I should slow down. However, what happens is the engine goes to idle RPM and I go even faster that I otherwise would with OD on (light off) and significantly more than if OD was off (light on).
