So my 87 f150 (4.9 efi) smokes and backfires a little bit im reverse, but only once in a while. It seems very strange to me that it wouldn't do it all the time. Anyone have any ideas as to what might cause.that?
If it's a manual, your engine should have absolutely no clue which direction it's going. It just spins the transmission input shaft, and the gears inside the transmission dictate which way the output shaft rotates.
Very strange it's only be in reverse.
I'd suggest as Harte3 said, and check to pull any computer codes.
This may be a stretch, but when i went to back my truck into my shop my exhaust turndown threw up a bunch of thick dust from my gravel driveway, looked like smoke and got me very worried.
Other than that only thing i could imagine is if the tranny is leaking near the drive shaft, it could throw it on the muffler only in reverse, and in drive it throws any oil in the opposite direction.
This happened on my friends Cherokee
