I have a 2009 F-250 XL that I added fog lights to. I got the factory switch and wiring harness and thought it would be a simple install.
Put it all together and no lights. I was informed the truck may have to be told it has fog lights now. I had some work done at the dealer and
they said they would get in the computer and turn them on. When they tried to do that the computer said "this vehicle not authorized" and they
couldn't turn them on. They also said they had never seen that before. Is there another way I can use the factory switch? Anyone else seen that before?
I know, I can use my upfitter switches but that is my last resort.
Sorry but that is just too damn funny. Damn computers are taking over.
As far as your question goes, I'm not sure. Can you pull out the switch and see if it even has power to that terminal when you turn it on? If it does, then maybe you can wire it straight from the switch to energize a relay. Then use the relay to supply power from the battery to the lights. That should bypass the computer nanny.
There maybe other changes you have to make for the GEM/BCM to be able to be programmed. Some XL trucks don't have the wiring or correct module to support such things. I know on the 2011-2016 XL trucks, in order to install fog lamps, if the truck didnt have factory power windows, you had to replace/upgrade the under hood fuse box before you could program the BCM to enable the fog light settings. I am not sure if the 2008-2010 trucks are the same.
you can try using FORScan and see if you can do it yourself. There may be an Asbuilt data change you can use to enable the correct settings in the module.
What kit did you get? I know that for the 2011 and up models there are 2 factory wiring harnesses. One for the XL and one for everything else. I installed them on a 2011 XLT that did not have factory fog lights but did have auto head lamps. For me it was plug and play. If I did not have auto head lamps, then I had to install them and go to the dealer and have all of that "turned on".
