2002 F350 intermittent sputtering [SOLVED]
02F350 4x4 7.3l, ~143k miles.
I've owned the truck for the past 15k miles and its been trouble free for the most part. This summer I was driving home one day and noticed as I slowed down the truck began to spit and sputter, like it was missing. Drove it the next day and the problem was gone. Drove it a few days later and the problem came back.
After some reading online I came across 3 possible quick fixes
- Poor oil quality
- Cam Position Sensor
- Injection Pressure Control sensor
...for a couple months and then it returned. Not all the time mind you. Sometimes it would start up fine and run all day without issues. Sometimes it would run fine in the morning and then sputter when I used it in the evening. But it was starting to get worse. So I was thinking that maybe I had a bad injector, or that my UVCH was a little loose. But the symptoms weren't really consistent with that. It would spit and sputter at idle but as soon as I put load on it the truck ran great. Sometimes when I was parking it, it ran steady, sometimes it would run rough after driving it.
Then I came across a video posted by dieseltechRon (RIP) where he showed the 42pin connector (on the top of the drivers valve cover, under the air intake) would actually rub against the valve cover till the wire was exposed, temporarily shorting out the circuit and causing the sputtering. Sure enough I had a wire that was worn past the insulation, so I taped it up and drove it again this morning.
But it still sputtered.
Long story short I had a poor connection at the 42 pin harness where the 10mm bolt goes in. I had the connections cleaned up and tightened down but when I wiggled the wiring leading to the connector I could simulate the issue.
What I ended up doing was zip tying the other side of the harness (passenger side I guess) to the intercooler piping. This seemed to tighten up my connections and I do believe the problem has been repaired.
Just thought I'd share with future readers dealing with the same issue.
