Having bought a number of trucks and cars over the years, I've always tried to be fair with the saleman. 1956MarkII makes some very valid points and I appreciate his input. If a person will do their homework, research the prices on the 'net at many sites, you'll be surprised at what you'll learn. Remember one thing though, most of the invoice prices don't include fuel costs (about $50) and the advertisment fees (FDAF) $200-500. These need to be added into invoice. I myself want to be paid a fair wage for my labor, so I expect the dealer to do the same. The key here is "fair" not greedy like some dealers have tried in the past with me. Those dealers never see me again.

1956MarkII,
Thanks for all your information....I'm in the market for a 2004 F-150, Ext Cab. All the advice you gave is good to know. I know that dealers have to make a profit too or there won't be any dealers. A little homework though can save 100's maybe 1000's off the sticker price. I have used Edmunds and car prices and NADA, but I will also use fordvehicals.com and do a comparison of all, then look around my area for the best deal I can get. I will use your advice in my negotiations. Thanks again

The key to negotiating: DON'T GET EMOTIONALLY INVOLVED!!

Most people read this to mean "don't fall in love with the vehicle," but it goes a lot further than that. Dealers want you to get emotionally involved becuae they know it will lead you to stop using your brain, which will cause you to do something stupid and irrational. Less than 1% of the buyers today just walk in and pay sticker; dealers know this. So they use the other side of the emotional coin: they get you to become angry. They tell you that you must pay sticker, or offer you way too little for your trade. You get angry because they've insulted your intelligence, and off you go. THE DEALER DOES THIS ON PURPOSE! Now you're emotionally involved, you're not going to think clearly, and you've just been duped.

Whatever you do, KEEP YOUR COOL. The customer that scares the bejeezus out of the most seasoned car dealer is the one that never shows any emotion whatsoever. When they present the trade-in value for your car, or the clean-deal price they're willing to sell for, just sit there and don't say a word. Wait for them to say something. There's an old saying in the industry: he who speaks first, LOSES. Seriously, this is the best advice I can offer anyone walking into a showroom. Don't fall for the "angry" ploy; remain calm no matter how ugly it gets. You'll make out in the long run.

1956markII,
thanks again....although for me, if a dealer makes me angry I'll just leave the dealership without saying a word and go somewhere else, but usaully I at their first option because I know it's a game. I shoot for the deal that is good for me and fair to the dealer. A thing that I have learned to do is to negoticate a deal and not a payment, I've seen too many people fall into this " I want this payment" trap.

Thats the only way I buy anymore: direct from fleet. Around here they usually have a set amount over invoice they will sell to you in fleet, $300 to $500 is typical. Trucks sell real well around here. I liked edmunds.com back in 1997 when it wasn't associated with car manufacturers. Now it looks like Carbytel.com. I was able to get a Jeep for $300 over invoice in 1997 using edmunds.
I'm buying my new ford for invoice through fleet.
I have been able to negotiate an invoice price on a new truck at one of the really high volume ford dealers in the regular sales department. But that's probably because it was for my dad and he let me do all the talking so I didn't get 'emotionally involved' as I probably would have if it were mine. After settling on the price, the only tried real hard to get us to buy their $899 alarm. Like four people had to come out and talk to us about it before they would sign off on the deal. Guess 'no' four times was enough.

When I want to test drive and get a feel for the vehicle, I go to a dealer I know I'm not going to buy from no matter what, so that way I can have fun 'negotiating' and just walk out. Then I can know exactly what I want when I go to the dealer I will be buying from and not be enamoured with the vehicle because I've already been there and done that.
The one I test drove with last weekend keeps calling and the price keeps getting lower. Too bad for him I ordered it from fleet today.

I know what you mean.

One time was buying a car for my wife with a coupon for $2k off for college graduates that we presented after working out an already good deal. This was 93 and things were a little different then than now.

They ended up taking us to the sales managers office while he pitched us for an hour about needing electronic rustproofing and extra warranty all while chain smoking. Said no about 100 times.
We finally went for the warranty when he made a deal that if we didn't use it, we could get the full amount refunded at the end of the 5 year term- which we did.

Only ended up paying interest on that warranty.

Funny thing after all that high pressure sales, they tried to slip the "coupon" for $2k back out of the deal on the paperwork- we had to correct thier "mistake".

I think they fired the salesman after us- dissapeared from the car dealership.

Make sure you verify whether or not you want the extended service plan also. Picked up my '03 Ranger Edge yesterday, got the contract today. Did not realize I had paid for the exrended service because they did not talk to me about it. Added $1495.00 onto the price of the truck. Still got a good deal, just read the fine print before signing.

That's fine if you feel comfortable with the warranty, but you're not required to purchase it. If you DON'T want it, and you cancel it within 30 days of the vehicle purchase, Ford will refund 100% of the purchase price.

1978fordtruckgirl;

I would go back and ask for your money back on the extended warrenty. $1495 seems like too much. YOu can get extended warrenties for cheaper. Any sugeestions 1956MarkII? If you want the extended warrenty then jsut ignor this message

I'd need to know what level of coverage she got, along with the months/ miles. If it was a powertrain warranty, she got taken; if it was bumper-to-bumper, she got the deal of a lifetime. I'm also assuming that it's the Ford extended warranty. If it's NOT Ford, then she may as well cancel it and get here money back. If you've read some of the other posts around FTE, you'll know that the non-Ford service contracts are not worth the paper they're printed on.

just another note about warranties...most of the dealerships I work with around here try to add them on automatically...just as FordTruckGirl said....they don't ask...they print up the documents and when they get the customers in to sign if anything is said they use some lame excuse....they have even gone as far to say "the credit union requires it"...THIS IS NOT THE CASE. A financial institution cannot require you to purchase a warranty or insurance (credit life/disability/involuntary unemployment/etc) but some go ahead and sign and decide to call us up at a later, more convenient time to try and get it removed. A contract is a contract...once you sign it you have to fulfill your part of it.

Being educated against the typical ploys some dealerships use is the best way to take care of it.

well, we got close to below invoice. getting our truck for $100 above invoice, and then you can take off the amount for the different rebates we are available to get. info about truck in sig!!

if you want to get one below invoice, get one from bobby or cochise for $500 below invoice. they will have it dropped off at a local dealer for around $250 i think(depends on your dealer). this is a november deal, so you don't have too much longer if you want this deal.
