My father in law has given me his 01 Ex. It’s a Limited 4x4 diesel. It will need an engine as the one in it was run out of oil and is shot (250,000 miles). I am going to go with a crate 7.3. What other upgrades/options do you recommend? I will be using it mostly to tow my 34’ camper. It’s 10,000 lbs maybe more when loaded. Below are a few options I’m considering during the engine swap.
It will be around March of next year before I can get this project going so I’m in info gathering mode now. I’m a farmer and just don’t have the time right now. I want to pick y’alls minds for some good mods for power and reliability. Currently it is bone stock.
Mishimoto radiator & 6.0 trans cooler
Banks Power Pack Bundle
because the 7.3 injectors run off oil the engine typically shuts down from the injectors stop firing well before and bearings are harmed from a lack of oil. often the only thing that is damaged is the HPOP and that is a easy fix.
skip the banks power pack, hight quality parts but just doesn't deliver the bang for the buck.
i suggest.
brand new not remanufactured injectors from Alliant
AIS air filter
PHP Hydra chip
4” exhaust
wicked wheel
if you like, the Banks power elbow ( exhaust side ) works well as does the big head waste gate controller
always use only Motorcraft sensors ( you have been warned )
before you get to any of that however, do all the maintenance stuff on the top end.
turbo o rings
valve cover wire harness ( motorcraft)
billet fuel pressure regulator from www.dieselorings.com
valve cover CAC inserts
CAC boots
turbo boots
fuel bowl o rings
passenger side fuel line bracket
HPOP lines
R&R engine wire harness
oil cooler O rings
bellow up pipes
the 7.3 cooling system is very robust and does not need any mods, the motorcraft radiator is more then sufficient but the Autozone lifetime warranty ones have proven to be of equal quality at a fraction of the price.
rebuild the front end cooling system
motorcraft or navistar water pump
motorcraft thermostat ( avoid aftermarket as they use a different gasket )
idler pulley
tensioner
clutch fan
belt
all 5 radiator hoses
coolant tank
cap
belt
ELC coolant ( must flush system first )
with the 6.0 cooler don't forget the most important part, a trans temp gauge.
Pirate4x4_camo: not sure what’s shot just yet. My father in law just said it was. My plan is to get it home and replace all fluids and filters and try to start it. Hoping to get it running cheap (as if that’s an option) but planning for the worst. Wow that’s a big list and will keep me going for awhile. Thank you for your reply, it’s going to save me some money. I know it will be awhile before I get to working on it but I will keep you all posted.
ShelbyHauler: LOL no chickens for me. I’m a row cropper. Cotton, corn, soybeans, wheat and peanuts.
I see that the CD version is available for a fraction of the price. I ordered the gasser version which should be here next week. I can post if it is legit or if I wasted $13.
Piteate4x4_camo thank you for the links and info. This was a farm excursion the last it was driven so I do t doubt that the oil may have been long over due for a change. Once I get it home I’ll change all the fluids and start narrowing down what the issues may be. I’m thinking I can actually get it running again without an engine swap for now. That’s my plan anyway. I’ll check out the laptops and getting forscan. Anything I’m able to do I’ll do it.

plenty of people use the electronic version, i prefer the book. to each their own.
I prefer the printed versions myself. My laptop battery is dead anyway so books are easier to flip through when outside at the EX.iI just got the two set manuals but I thunk I might need the emissions diagnosis book eventually. I doubt the CD's come with it.
