Talking 2001 Excursion 7.3 Power Upgrades

I have a 2001 Excursion I bought last November. It has 192,000 on the original 7.3 and Auto. The guy I bought the truck from used it as a family bus. I however plan to use it as a race rig, 10,000lbs 26ft Box.

The first thing I had to do is put airbags on it to hold the load. It appears to use most of its 3/4 ton rating to hold itself up.

It is BONE Stock. A sales guy from a local diesel performance shop says I should put on a Tuner, Exhaust with down pipe and an air cleaner kit. He says with 75HP tuner the driveline will be fine. He also thinks it will gain 3-5 MPG.

I do plan to tow and use it as a bus. What should I do, don't do and expect?

with the mile's you have the tran's is at the end of it's life, most never get that far,see if it has the larger factory tran's cooler,if not get an after market one that's bigger and look into a suncoast or BTS heavy duty tran's,check the cooling system for proper level's of FW15,the dealer's have the test strip's for this, better yet drain and flush and recharge with FW15 added to the antifreese and use distilled water for the mix allway's and forget the extra 3-5 MPG with the programer, you will get the extra HP but not the extra MPG,good luck with your truck.

It came with a factory tow package and was bought new in Texas. The trans cooler runs the full length of the radiator and looks to be at least 4-6+ inches tall. I did remove the front lisence plate and braket. They seemed to be blocking about 2/3s of the bottom opening in front of the power steering cooler and trans cooler.

The transmission shifts very well and seems to not slip at all. I am also afraid of it. I have a long tow to Mid Ohio coming up and it is the only thing I am concerned about. The previous owner flushed the transmission every 75,000 miles.

That is why I question adding any extra power at this point, but would like to pick up some extra towing power though.

That also makes me leary as well. I flush mine every 30k and if my aftermarket gauge read any insanely high tranny temps then I would flush it first time I was able to after that. Who knows if he only did it every 75k what all happened inside. I'm with poppie, I would be surprised he didn't rebuild it unless he just got very lucky.

I guess. I can't imagine why he would lie. I too was and am shocked and afraid of it at 192K. But it was mostly highway trips and light duty. It does feel positive when it shifts.
