please help me choose

I'm looking to get an excursion to tow my 7k lb. Camper a few times a year. I found 2 : a 2002 limited 7.3 with 92k on it and a 2001 xlt with leather and a v10. I'll be driving less that 10k miles a year on this as it is my second vehicle not a daily driver. The 7.3 Is $5000 more. Please help me decide.

Buy the one you like and feel comfortable with the cost. They will both do a great job towing.

I'm just curious if it's really worth the 5k for a yr newer with the diesel. Is it cost effective with the amount of miles I'll be putting on it.

I have an '02 with a V10 and 4.30 gears used to tow a similar sized camper. It does it, but struggles a little...I push it hard too. The 7.3 is going to pull better. Is it worth it? That's up to you. I'll go gas again (6.2L) when we have to give up the Excursion. Something about $35 full synthetic oil changes and such that appeal me to the gas motors. Diesels are cool, gas is simplistic (sort of). Hard to beat a 7.3 though.

EDIT: Make sure of the rear gearing in the 7.3, you don't want it if it has the 3.54

I have to agree. I say go with what feels right. I knew I was a diesel guy from the beginning, so that is what I went with. However, that does not mean the gasser is not the right way to go.

Sorry this is not helping much, but it is like I say to folks who ask me what is better, the Canon or the Nikon camera. I tell them they will both get the job done, it mainly boils down to what feels better to them.

Good luck with your choice!

How many miles on the XLT?

Where are you located?

Do you only need 2WD?

Kind of like what feels better a Glock or a Sig-Sauer?

Form follows function.

Well let's just say I got the diesel bug, sold my v10 and spent over 15k additional for my diesel. The V-10 was amazing thru 228k miles, but I just wanted a diesel.

In the case of those two mentioned, I will pass and go for the Walther. However, I much rather have my .44 mag Ruger revolver.

The revolver is sort of like the diesel, no frills, lots of power and will always get the job done!

Pretty sure the 3.54's weren't an option with the 7.3,,,
Having an 02 4x4 Ultimate Limited 7.3, and having towed probably half of its 163k miles, and your main use will be towing, personally I would go for the 7.3. If you said you were looking for a DD for the fam for running around, I would say go gasser, but your main use will be towing, and dat's what the 7.3 is made for! I have nothing against the V10's, but towing between the 2 is different, the V10, you gotta have your foot in it, the 7.3 not so much. They both will perform, and you will love either one, but since you stated it's main purpose is for TOWING, I would go 7.3

I agree totally, but I had a buddy with a 3.54 is his 7.3 F250 and it sucked. Just wanted to throw that out there.
