I finally started on my 1953 Mercury M350. I purchased it last year without an engine, Well, now I have a 239 flat head but the issue seems to be mating it to the still installed 4 speed (with PTO). Do I have the correct bell housing? do I need some kind of adapter? 10" flywheel 10" flywheel another view 4 speed in 1953 M350 work in progress 1953 Mercury M350 Express with dump bed
I will attempt to attach some photos to show what I have and hopefully, one of you more experience gents can get me on track. Any help greatly appreciated. I will also attempt to post a pic of the truck as it appears today.
If you remove the black "half bellhousing" from your engine they should mate up.
53 trucks used the one year only bellhousing.
Thats a neat truck!
Edit.
Also not 100 % sure here but i would think you need an 11" flywheel and clutch setup? The 10" were typically used on the 1/2 ton trucks
You may very well make that work however not sure how much adjusting of everything will be required?
Do you have the 10" disk and pressure plate?
The starter plate that's on the engine may also not be correct? Im trying to recall if the 53 starter plate is different.? There are quite a few varietions on those plates from 48 to 52. I'll look and see if ive got one handy to look at when I get home.
Do you have a starter plate that goes with the bell housing?
Here are a couple pictures of some different plates.
The bottom one is the one you need. I think the top two plates are for a car. 53 starter plate with the dust/flywheel cover.
No, I do not have the starter plate. I also need a clutch release fork and the front engine mount (I think the "horse shoe" kind that attaches next to the water pumps)?
I just realized your truck is a '53; I can't say with certainty they need the 11" clutch for the 4-sp. All the 48-52's crashboxes do. Is your trans a 4-Synchro, T87? I'll see if I can tell from the parts book.
edit: Yes, it appears you do need an 11"
Too bad your not close by. Ive got alot of 11" flywheels etc. But no 10" ones.
The 53 f250 i picked up last year has a t98 4 speed but someone swapped in a yblock. I want to swap the flat v8 back into it eventually. I havent got into it yet but hopefully i'll have everything needed.
I can probably help with some of your parts needs .
