alternator harness clocking question

I believe my alternator bearing is going bad and I wanted to upgrade to a 100 amp. (1g)
Found a reman AC Delco but it is only a 12 clock. I need to double check mine but I don't think it is clocked at 12.
Anyone know if there is enough slack in the wiring to reach different positions?

Double check the diameter also. The higher amp alternators are usually large in diameter, so things do not line up sometimes with the brackets.

good point, I was planning on using a taurus 100 amp alternator, but the website doesn't show the overall diameter.
saw the taurus tip in a recent thread here and thought I'd go that route instead of stock.

Taurus is 3G correct? You are going to have re-wire anyway, so the wire position should not matter, as long as something is not in the way where the wires plug in.

He is talking about the early Taurus 1G Alt I suspect.
You need to have a large frame 1G alt on your truck to do this swap. The Large case Alts have all the connections on the side, small case Alts on the back. (See below pics)

The Alt can be re-clocked but you need to be careful doing it. Take out the 4 bolts holding the case together. And loosen the stator from the front case. You can then twist the back case and stator to where it needs to be clocked at.
NOTE: YOU MUST turn the stator and back case together or you will damage the stator wiring.
If you end up pulling the back of the case and stator off the rotor all is not lost.
On the back of the case, you will see a small hole just above the bearing housing. Get a chunk of rebar tie wire about 3 " long, on the inside of the case you push the slip ring brushes up in to place then insert the wire to hold them. This wire holds the brushes clear of the slip rings when you put it back together.
Once you reassemble the alt remove the wire. This applies to all Motorcraft Alts 1,2 and 3G

Large case

Small Case

Yes 1G taurus alternator.
Excellent tip on the differences between the alternators.
I suspect mine is the small case than.

Anyone know if a large case bracket can be procured from someplace for a 460?
I'm guessing that is what the issue is here? a large case will not fit the smaller case bracket due to the distance between ears?
Just trying to think of ways to work around this.
Might be better to ask in the 460 section but thought I'd try here first and keep it all together.

Depends on the mounting. The difference between them is the distance between the mounting holes. Due to the case size difference. Otherwise, everything else is the same.
If the mounting is as such (See below a 390 but the same idea)) a separate single-bolt adjusting/tensioning arm. You can use either small or large case alternator on this setup. Although it will not be a perfect fit at the extreme end of the slack adjustment you can make it work.

If you have the room to swing it but the adjusting arm slot is not long enough make it longer.

I ran into that with my ranger when I retro fitted a 100 amp GM alternator on it off a Monte Carlo. If you look at the picture above with the red circle, I just took the bolt to the right loose, welded a extension to bring it up higher, and then re-used it like that. That gave me the increased distance I needed to clear the larger alternator.
