Alternator Upgrade Amperage Question

Another question- I am about to replace my alternator but Napa offers several different models that will physically fit, but all with different outputs. The options are 38, 55, 65 amps output. Is there a downside to installing a high rated alternator? Specifically, if I install the 55 amp unit, will it fry the fusible links or parts of the wiring harness?

The output rating only specifies how much current the alternator is capable of generating, not how much it actually puts out. The alternator only generates what is required as determined by the regulator. The only downside to going up in rating is cost.

The cost differential is usually pretty nominal, i'd go 65 amp if it's in your budget, if you want to add a set of fog lights or whatever at a later date you're good to go.

Don't waist your money. Do a 3G 130A upgrade. You can get the stuff out of the junk yard and be into it less than $100. Usually much less. I'm getting ready to do it myself.

I saw that LMC has a 100 amp for $100 sounds like a good deal to me. The 3g conversion sounds great but for simplicity and time saving I would go with a stock style high amp one.
