It sounds like the wrong damper, if anything. I didn't think that was possible?
It might be, but it ran fine no shake or vibrations just need someway to verify correct timing if I can get it running again. can't get fire out of the new coil. Got fire in and pulsating fire from the dist back to neg side of coil but nothing coming from the dist feed out of the coil. Tried 2 new coils both doing the same thing so something else must be going on. guess that's why we call it fun!
Start by checking for a spark from the coil itself, hold the coil wire about 1/2" from a head bolt or good ground. It should be a fat blue spark. Running points? Dress with a fine point file, it doesn't take long for them to crud over. Make sure it's a good quality condenser, i.e. Motorcraft or Echlin, they sell only junk today at most of the parts stores. New condensers, the el-cheapos, are nothing but trouble
Coils definitely fail, but it's not super common. They often get replaced unnecessarily. How often? Jim Linder, Bubbas Ignition, taught automotive instruction and he wrote that somebody like Sears or whoever gave him a 55 gallon drum stuffed full of old ignition coils to play with, representing years worth of repairs. He said they only found a few bad ones.
Thanks for the pic...went looking for the old one I tool off originally can't locate it...but it was a straight pointer off the frt timing cover and the damper was larger than the original one so the old one wouldn't work. Got a guy not too far from me that has some old y blocks hope he has something for me to try.
Just to be clear, the pointer mounts to the lower bolts of the water pump, not exactly to the timing cover. If the pointer did not mount to those two bolts, then it is the wrong one for all dampers, not just the one that it is not fitting..
Found the pointer, I shorten the length from the water pump mount down to the damper and it worked out good. It was too long from the water pump down to the damper. Apparently the damper on the engine originally was smaller in circumference and the pointer had to be longer going down to it.
