white smoke issues

well, been fighting a smoking issue the last week on my 7.3idi na. a little history on it. bought from dealer as wholesale for $500, being a heavy equipment mechanic I have the tools and skill to keep her running good. guy that traded it in had spent a TON of money on her recently, almost everything under the hood is new. well I found the IP was left loose so I gave her a dime thickness advancement and tightened her down. fired her up and it kinda smoked, not like a freight train but enough to be annoying as hell. performed a cylinder contribution test and all 8 tested good. did a compression test all 8 were high numbers and well within 10%deviation(cant remember exact numbers). I am thinking the IP isnt timed correctly as she runs pretty rough and I think I am also fighting air intrusion at the return o-rings. also noticed the exhaust manifold gasket is blown out so that will be getting changed out quickly. please some helpful advice would be awesome before my wife gives me the "i told your ******* so" look

welcome to FTE.
i think you are probably on track with injector pump being out of time.
it may also have bad injectors

The running rough is normally due to air intrusion (I would start here first) a bad injector pump and or bad injectors.

Air the the fuel will cause it to smoke white.

I'd get the fuel leaks/air intrusion fixed first then you can play with the pump timing to a sweet spot you like.

the injectors look fairly new(or freshly rebuilt). the Previous owner spent some big money on this engine recently. a fresh rebuilt pump from OFI. I'll play with it a little this weekend. want to make sure the injectors are seated and torqued to spec.

Just Maybe since the IP was loose and changed ....... maybe they didn't get the Timing Gears on the Mark

Are any of the Injector lines getting Hot ?

I am kinda leaning towards that possibility. When the IP was loose it would go from little to no smoke to straight up fog machine status. Going to play with it a little tomorrow. I did notice injector no.8 has some fuel weeping from it. Just ordered my o-rings and exhaust manifold gaskets from rockauto. Nobody nearby has parts available and for gaskets and o-rings shipped $34. Local parts store wants $35 just for the exhaust gasket

it's probably worth checking, thes IDI engines generally run pretty good when everything is set to the marks including the one on the pump housing and the top timing cover...... after that you can play a bit with it

Looks like I will be doing that this weekend instead. And injector lines getting hot is a sign of the injectors failing I suppose

Well, it's an indicator of possible compression gasses getting past... they will eventually all heat up but IF one or 2 is getting hotter than the others it's a sign that they might not be seating right. ,,,,,, it's just an indicator at best.

At some point someone may have pulled the pump mount housing off and could have gotten it a tooth off. You can check it without pulling the front end down. I would bet the bumpstick and crank are good. If you pull the pump mount housing off you can get pump drive gear timed. You can take an o ring pick and feel for the mark on the stick gear. A sharp pick and the one in a kit that has a slightly twisted end, will give you the best feel.

ya good Idea, with the dental Pic they can be a Bastid for sure, and I have personally seen folks get the gear off a couple teeth after the pump was removed, I would think it hard to do but there is enough play under that housing to do it, especially IF the tach sensor is out, some folks can lift the cover before they realize they didn't need to do that, and often it is easier to unscrew the lines from the injectors and just remove the whole assy (this is what I do on the JunkYard finds )

EDIT: you know what they say about a Cotton Field and an Anvil Never trust what the last guy did
