It depends, if you are in rural farm country where the law won't mess with you and you aren't going far you could probably tow 18,000 lbs. If you are going cross country you probably wouldn't want to go much over book.

What sort of stuff will you be towing and how far you going?

It's gonna really struggle with anything more than 5000lbs.

It really depends on where and what you are comfortable with. If you are comfortable slowing down and driving in the slow lane with the 18 wheelers up a hill or mountain or if you feel you need to always be able to go at least the speed limit.

Trailer brakes will greatly increase your ability to handle a big load. It's always about the brakes before it's about the motor, IMO.

This is not legal advice, just my experience...

my truck is not stock, let's leave it at that. I can safely put 6k on the bed and drive down any road. I built it to haul whatever I can fit on it. The most I have had on the truck is ~9k(on the bed). The most I have towed is ~30,000 lbs(a partial railcar of wheat) It took a while to get going and it took forever to stop (no trailer brakes, let's not go there). The truck didn't have any trouble once it got moving. Low range would have been nice, but it was 2wd at the time. I pulled that load about 25 miles. Not what I wanted to do, but it was a "haul this out of here today or you don't get it" kind of deal.

Use trailer brakes, don't haul heavier than you can handle safely, don't do stupid stuff.

I have made several changes to my truck since getting it. It has a 3 ton rear end and springs, air ride, drilled drums, abs delete, egr delete, manual steering. I am working on the 4wd swap and onboard air. I'm thinking about putting disc brakes on the rear, but it just works so well right now. I need to get my dump flatbed/crane finished so I can load bigger stuff without needing a forklift/loader.

For short distance, within an one or two hours not freeway driving, I don't go over 250lbs more than Gross Vehicle Combined Weight(GVCW).
If long hauling, I stick within limits of the GVCW. No sense in breaking stuff, if its not rated for it, just costs more time and money.
