Curious

Hello all, my truck is a 1965 F100 4x4. The brakes are terrible, so I pulled the drums and discovered that the PO had put both long shoes on the passenger side. The driver's side appeared to be on there right but they don't seem to be making contact with the drum. When I look in the shop manual, it says to get the front drum off you have to take the whole hub and bearings off. On mine the drum comes right off like on the back. Did they change mid-year? Does anyone have a picture of what the 4x4 brakes are supposed to look like?

Are you trying to restore to correct original, or are you just trying to get good brakes? Do you have a power brakes? Is your truck a toy, or a work truck? Do you tow, and what do you tow?

Hi Eric, thanks for replying to me! I'm not restoring it, but I do plan on driving it a good bit when I can and just having fun with it. I cannot afford to put disc brakes on it. I just want it to stop like it did when it was new. I realize it won't be like newer cars but I can drive accordingly. Chris

My truck does not have power brakes, and they don't have the self adjusting mechanism in the front. Are they supposed to?

Self-adjusters on the 4x4 trucks, too? Are you positive? My 1966 F250 4x4 trucks came with the brakes that are larger than an F100 but neither of them came stock with the self-adjusters front or back neither one. Looks like the 1964/66 F100 4x4 also came with no self-adjusters.

Taking off the entire wheel, brake drum and hub/bearings is just one way to do it - it's the quick way to get to the brake carrier plate. My F250 has 8 lugs, plus 3 large screws on the drum. If you instead pull the locking hub or drive gear and remove a snap ring and use one of these to remove the bearing nuts it all just falls off.

T59T-1197-B - Spanner Wrench

I was a quicker way for the shop mechanics to get into it. Only works on the 4x4 trucks.

No self-adjusters on F100 4x4 trucks until 1967. Those will be manually adjusted brakes only on yours.

Self adjusters introduced in 1964 F100 2WD's, 1967 F100 4WD's.

Ok, so how come it shows self adjusting brakes in the 1965 manual?

F100 2WD's had 'em in 1965, F100 4WD's did not.

No one, both Lee Iacocca and "The Deuce" are as dead as Julius Caesar.

I wouldn't necessarily complain that you don't have self-adjusters. As ND has said many times the cables are notorious for snapping and it's not until you open it up that you realize the kind of damage a loose stainless steel cable end can do to the drums and shoes.
