Is there a way/procedure to reset the (neutral safety switch)NSS in a 2003 Ford Excursion (w/7.3L) or F250?
Quote: NSS - Neutral Safety Switch. I may be using the incorrect term relative to the Ford Diesels. But, IIRC, this is what reports the gear position to the PCM. If the PCM doesn't receive the correct signal, it will prevent the engine from starting. Not sure if an incorrect P/N signal allows/prevents the crank.
If the TRS (not NSS) does not show park or neutral there will be no crank.
What do you mean reset? It's just a switch. If yours is bad, you need to replace it. It takes no time to change. You don't even need to jack the truck up.
Also, the neutral safety switch is part of the transmission range selector.

There is no way to reset the TRS (Transmission Range Sensor.) There is also no need to reset it. It does need to be properly aligned.
It is aligned in neutral. There is a mark in the center rotating part that aligns with a mark in the TRS case when it's properly aligned. That's all there is to it.
No. The transmission range selector lives on the driver's side of the transmission. You chock the wheels, put the selector in neutral inside the truck, remove the dead range selector and put the new one on. Align it with the obvious marks and fasten the bolts. It's super easy.
oharal is correct. This isn't a matter of a sloppy shifter or a vehicle that won't crank when the selector is in PARK. It's an issue of making sure that the electrical switch/sensor assembly that tells the computer what position the shift lever is in (and switches the reversing lamps on in R) is adjusted to send the correct signals to the computer based on the mechanical position of the transmission's input shift selector shaft. That shaft, of course, must be properly linked back to the driver's shift selector.
On other vehicles without the alignment marks on the sensor and transmission, I'd secure the vehicle from rolling, turn ignition to RUN and put the shift lever in the REVERSE position. Then, I'd adjust the position of the sensor so that the backup lights were on, something I could see reflected off something behind the car/truck. Seemed to work just fine!
when you replace this, make sure you fully seat it before you tighten the screws. If it doesn't fully seat, it will bend the contacts internally and not work properly.
OK, so I chalked the vehicle and then put the selector on R. The reverse lights came on. does that mean that it still needs to be realigned or replaced?
does anyone know if that's strictly a Ford Park or is that a part that can be purchased at Napa or O'Reilly?

Well you never actually said what you're trying to fix so we don't know how to guide you. If your problem is the engine won't crank and you didn't replace the TRS then this test tells you nothing.

Well, Actually, my vehicle will crank but will not start so technically I am trying to fix it. Prior to it's current state the linkage below had come off so I thought that possibly I had disrupted the neutral safety. When I put the KEYN and put the selector in reverse the lights came on so I'm not sure, now, that anything is out of sync and that there might be another issue.
Let us know what other symptoms you're seeing. (exhaust smoke, any attempts to fire, anything). Do you have a bluetooth OBDII tool and the torque pro app?
