Does anyone know if besides price there is a discernible difference between motorcraft sp459 (FireWire platinum) and motorcraft sp549 (platinum) spark plugs? Thanks!
I know you didn't ask, but the general consensus is that older engines don't benefit from platinum plugs, and will make more power with copper plugs. Platinum plugs are better in the sense that they last longer, but I think with a Duraspark or points ignition - or even TFI, you are better off with copper plugs, and Motorcraft for sure.
I once pulled a not-very-old set of Bosch platinums out of an old 5.0 Mustang and put in some copper plugs, and I couldn't believe how much better it ran. This was before I had the internet, so I had no idea.
The downside is most of these ignitions don't have the voltage necessary to jump the gap of platinum or iridium plugs. They also tend to foul plugs quicker, platinum and iridium plugs are great in higher voltage higher amperage systems and long intervals with tight fuel management. This is why they are OEM, in reality your FE isn't going to see 100k plug change intervals so a copper core plug would be the best for starting and general use in a stock ignition system. Also don't trust rock auto for part numbers or parts in general. The same motorcraft plugs are available from Ford, Amazon, Summit and Autozone.
Stock spark plugs, stock heat range, these will give a baseline for accurate tuning. Odds are that any carburetor needs calibrating (fuel pump pressure, wet fuel bowl level, jetting, power valve) and get much better results than some exotic rare-earth spark plug.
