Sooo don’t boot me for saying this lol. My main ride right now is a Chevy S10. My project truck is the 94 Ford F-150. Anyway I had to change the fuel pump today in the S10 as it was broken. Got it swapped out.
In the process I removed the truck bed. I found some other minor issues one being small rust spots in the bed. I removed the cheap plastic bed liner and went crap. So I’m gonna fix the rust issues and put a paint on or spray in bed liner in it. Before putting it back on the truck.
Anyway I need to drive this truck but right now it has no tail lights because the bed is off. Will those magnetic or clip on trailer lights if I hook the 4 flat back up and plug them in without having the regular lights plugged in? I don’t want to spend money on the lights if they are not going to work.
Short answer is that they should be OK -- if they provide all of the functions (turn/ brake/tail) when they're just hooked up to a trailer. There's no real magic in the truck tail lights. It should even blink at the normal rate ( adding trailer lights would make the turn signals blink faster).
Only thing is if they happen to be LED lights you will need an LED flasher.

i used the magnet tow lights on the rear bumper for two weeks when i had the bed off the 04 for frame rust remediation.
they worked fine plugged into the trailer plug.
