I just bought a 2WD 1976 Ford F-150, Im also new to the old truck scene. The Truck has a Ford 360 Fe big block with C3 transmission. the tranny is shot and id like to upgrade to one with more that 3 gears and preferably a manual (doesn't have to be). Ive been doing research far ages now and cant find one thats not a C6, Ive heard that the FEs are hard to get trannys for? I don't know weather or not that true but from what I can find, it seems to be true. Any suggestions are very helpful.
You have a C6 currently. Another c6 would be the easiest replacement.
The reason why it's hard to get a different transmission for an FE is because 1976 was the last year of them. Way before 5 or 6 speed manuals were common place.
There are options for you, but none of them are cheap and easy.
Oh okey, well I'll prob just stick the the c6 then, what rear gears should I get, because at the moment the car tops out at about 55 at a comfortable rpm.
Thanks

What's your "comfortable rpm"?
Also, do you plan on towing or hauling? My F100 has a stock 302 and has 2.75 rear gearing and it's highway rpm is pretty low for a non-OD transmission (C4), but it's not going to pull stumps out of the ground with the engine and gearing combo I have. It won't even spin the tires if I try. If you plan on towing or hauling I wouldn't go any lower (numerically) than 3.25 and that would be with a healthy engine at that.
I swapped 3.00 axles/gears in to one of my 460/C6 Broncos (had 3.50's) with 33" tires. Absolutely love it, especially on the highway. Lots of torque with a 460, and converter slippage multiplies that. Drives really nice. I have another set of frt/rear 3.00 gears for 2nd Bronco with 460/NP435.
As good as an E4OD? No probably not but way less hassle/modification.
