np435 or c6

i've been beating myself up over this, and i cant seem to find the answer.

take the exact same truck(70's) same engine, gears, tires......etc. and same driver and put a np435 (4spd) in one and a c6 in the other....which one would win in a drag race?

in my experience, the automatic would win. because of the long throw in the manual and the slop in the gears....plus, you cant use 1st. the auto seems to keep you on top of the gears way more and you get more horsepower.

what do you guys think....i know that modern sticks compared to autos are way faster, but how are the old guys compared to each other?

i'm fighting with myself, becuase since i have to pull my tranny anyways, i might swap it for a c6.

i love driving a stick, but i'm trying to add up all the pro's and cons of both to see which outweighs the other.

i dont tow anymore than 6000 lbs and i have a 460 with 4.10's and smaller tires what should i do?

I agree with you about the auto being alot faster shifting and faster in the end than the 4-speed. Sounds like you dont really need the granny gear much either. The C6 is a good tranny and I don't think you'd go wrong with one, but I would look at swapping to a ZF 5-speed too. The granny isn't as low, the other 3 are similar, and 5th is overdrive. It's still a truck tranny and probably won't win any drag races, but since you already have a manual in the truck now, I would think swapping to the ZF wouldn't be too hard. The ZF can be found in F250 and up pickups and chassis-cabs from sometime in the early or mid '80's up to '97. Look for one that was behind a 460 in a 4wd.

ZF ratios in trucks with gas engines: 5.72, 2.94, 1.61, 1.00, 0.76, 5.24 rev.
NP435 ratios: 6.69, 3.34, 1.79 (or 1.66), 1.00
C6 ratios: 2.46, 1.46, 1.00

The biggest advantage to the automatic is being able to power brake it while stopped, imo. It gives you a slightly faster reaction time and you get to keep the RPMS up.

Assuming you got a ZF out of a 4wd truck with a 460 in it, you'd be looking at re-mounting the t-case further aft, shortening the rear driveline and lengthening the front driveline, since the ZF is longer than the old 4-speed grannys. Shifter might need to be re-bent, the hole in the floor may need to be 'moved' a little and there would also be an issue with the hydraulic clutch on the ZF, assuming yours is mechanical. I don't know all the details involved with swapping between those two styles and not sure if a new flywheel would be needed too. Look for a post titled "the ZF has landed", I think here in the tranny forum. Someone there was doing some swapping involving a ZF.

To do the automatic, you would also likely need to re-mount the t-case and adjust the driveline lengths too. Of course you'd also likely need a flexplate, shift linkage, an automatic steering column, kick-down linkage, an auto-tranny radiator with the trans cooler in it and probably want to go with a second external cooler as well and a dipstick tube and dipstick from an automatic truck like yours.
