How turned up are we talking here? I have seen stock NV5600s hold up fine for years behind 700-800 HP Cummins trucks, same goes for the ZF6 in Fords. The G56 is weaker 500-550 HP seems to be the safe zone on those, but I have also seen them last a while at higher HP levels than that. With manual transmissions its the operator that decides how long they last.

we looked into the 5.9 but couldn’t find an engine under $4k

In a barn, in the country....

I actually got it got it from my dad, but that’s what he had in it. Around here, they go for 12-14 with some miles. Sometimes you see one cheaper.
