ummm i really have no idea what your sayin but im gunna guess lol, If your swapping a motor out your probably gunna want to find one from the same year as you have... however you could get a early 99 shortblock with the forged rods and then do the rest with 00 or later parts liket he later style turbo set up just be sure your using the right ecm with the right set up on top..... or hell swap a cummins in that bad boy

well yea sorta but its not gunna have near the power your stroker does, the displacement is the same yes but thats about it.... you need a 99 or newer if you want it to be the same motor, 94097 ps are pretty much the same but I think the internals are a bit weaker and pre94 7.3s are alot different

We are just talking about the short block(block, crank, rods, pistons) right?

Compressions higher on the 88 7.3's so the pistons would be a no go unless you had them cut to compression specs. The real question is, why are you looking at doing this swap?

The IDI 7.3 is a completely different block than the Powerstroke DI 7.3. So if you're just talking blocks the earliest you could possibly use in a powerstroke pickup would be the 1994 DI block. The late powerstroke blocks (1999 and after) are built heavier than the early ones, that is what I would look for if I was building an engine.
So to answer your question, the only way you could put a '88 7.3 in would be to convert the whole truck to the IDI engine, which would be a huge step backwards in horsepower, torque, and technology and probably more expensive than just buying a slightly used 7.3 DI engine.

im pretty sure I just saw somewhere that the compression in the 94-97 was different thatnthe 99 up ones too so that would make a huge difference... your really gunna wana look for a 99 block... or just do a cummins swap lol
