How difficult would it be to swap out my current 1999 6.8 liter gas hog for a 7.3 liter? I'm specifically wanting a 7.3, not a 6.0 or 6.4. The truck is a 1999 F250. Has anyone else made this swap yet? Any suggestions?
Damn, that's kinda tough decision, you could sell the V-10 to recover some of the costs of a new install, but I "think" in the end a 5.9 would be cheaper to install, plus you could get more power outta one. But I do applaud you for wantin' to keep it in the family LOL.
$10,000.00 and you've got yourself a 275 hp 7.3 PSD, maybe less, probably more, depends on how much work you do yourself...
You spend $10,000 on a Cummins (especially an older 12v) and you can have triple the power, but again, depends on how much you do yourself.
In a nutshell, you'll never find something more reliable than a 7.3 PSD, but never make anything close to the power of a 5.9 CTD.
I put about 25-30k into a 7.3 to come up with around 600 hp, I've got half that in the Cummins and I'm close to 1000. Of course, I have countless hours vested there.
What's your goal... reliability and fuel economy, or do you want the guy in a Corvette to look like an idiot.
I prefer the latter.
Cummins it is then. Jet, PM me im kinda in the dark, let me know what youve got into this engine and what youre doing!
Well hell, don't leave me out of this mix either.
Jet, are you doing this with a 24V or a CR?
Kris, I know that 1000 HP is not all that difficult with a CR engine, and I'm pretty sure the combo is not some magical secret like bigger power is here in PSD world. I can tell you right now how to make 800 on fuel and 1000 with a shot of nitrous. With what I've got going in, I should be at over 600 on fuel and less than $5K in mods.
To the OP, auto or manual? Either way, you'll need the 7.3 ECM and wiring harness. The electronics of it will be the most complicated part and the 7.3 has quite a bit of it. The hard parts should be pretty much the same. However, I don't know of anyone who has actually done that swap.

Actually Jeremy, I believe I sent you a link to threads of a guy who did this on an Excursion. I don't think it would be that much different.
You and me both buddy. I just fixed my puter again, among other things. Yeah, they are holding up to the tune of about 400HP. I suppose that is enough for now, yeah right. This engine will go no further as far as HP is concerned. Heck, I can hardly see out of the windshield for the dust and pollen on it.
