I have a chance to pick up a 7.3 motor for next to nothing. Only problem is that it is out of a 1997 OBS. Would it be worth building to put in the excursion? Should I hold out for a 99-03? It looks clean and supposedly only has 180000 miles on it.
Disclaimer: I don't know whether or not they changed any of the hard parts or overall block. Presumably, you'd be able to pull off the accessories from the X and slap them on a built 7.3.
I should have specified my ex is a v10. I'll have to source a transmission, pcm, and idm, but the engine is complete from pan to turbo with wiring harness and injectors, even all of the front end accessory drive. just missing an alternator.
Why would you want to swap the best engine that ever came in an EX for the second best one?
The easiest way to do a swap like that would be to have wrecked complete similar year and model donor as the recipient vehicle, lots and lots of stuff has to swapped over.
If I can get my hands on it I will rebuild it since it's out and it would get a 17 degree HPOP, AD injectors, and efuel system. I would essentially convert it to the newer 7.3, just using the 97 long block. May not be able to grab it though, he wants way more money today than he did yesterday lol. Not sure it's worth it since I'll still need to buy an idm and pcm, transmission, and everything else. I think I'll keep looking for a complete donor vehicle I can get everything off of

That's my current plan. It was planned to be done before now, but finances (to do it completely correctly) have slowed me down considerably.
IMHO the Cummins should have been in it from it's inception. Love my V10 though, and still running without any issues since I got it a couple years ago.
The 12V swap is fairly expensive, depending on how you do it. I have at least $8K in mine, but I'm rebuilding everything from the ground up. With a complete rebuild on the engine, let's see.....
$800 motor
$1200 all new internals
$500 machine work
$1500 6 speed manual
(round numbers)
I built all my own mounts, so the steel involved in that was negligible. So, I'm in my actual swap about $5K with other misc. items. Most folks buy all the mounts premade and then use the 5R or some other trans that wasn't behind a Cummins in the first place, so they have to buy adapters, etc, which ramps up the cost considerably. I'd hate to see the bill from a shop to do one of these swaps.

Agreed. Though you're on the manual trans route...for those of us with the Auto trans route, with the torque of the Cummins in anything excepting it's stock form we'll be reliability wise better off with the 4R100 with some upgrades.
Only the RH won't need a trans controller...the RE will need one and a tune (just like the 4R100). Money wise, I'm sure if I stayed with a 48RH/RE it'd be sure to grenade eventually and no doubt at a time when it's not convenient (far from home).
How much are you allowing for the 6 speed manual upgrades, or are you using an NV5600...nevrmind, saw you're going G56. A turned up Cummins will toast a factory NV5600 or a G56! So there's money going into that trans build somewhere including pedals and sensor adapter mods, clutch/pressure plate, and some cryo again...unless you're remaining with stock power levels.

I'm mostly at stock power, and if I grenade the G56, I'll redo it to a ZF6-750. I still keep an eye out for one here and there. I have 5x.012's and a 230HP pump that I'll do the free mods and a #10 plate. If that pump is bad, then I'll go to the 215 pump (887 or 913) and go from there. No real plans to upgrade from the HX35 turbo. I'm also running gear lube and not ATF in my trans.
