47 steering column lock mechanism
I have a 1947 pickup with a steering column locking mechanism. Unfortunately, the key was snapped off in the lock. I have already taken it to one locksmith who was unable to extract the old key. Do I need to remove the the whole mechanism? If so, how do I go about doing that? Suggestions?

Best to remove the column drop from the steering column. To do this you will have to drill the clamp bolt and use an easy out to unscrew it. Once the drop has been removed you'll need to drill into the pin holding the lock cylinder to the drop. Best to drill into it, then tap it for a machine screw, use a spacer between the screw and the drop to jack the pin out of it's hole. Tightening the machine screw will pull the pin out so the lock cylinder can be removed. To re-install the lock cylinder you can use something for a replacement pin or just tap the hole for a socket head set screw. If using a set screw (recommend) use some epoxy to fill the driver hole, so the screw can't be easily removed by a thief. Good luck!
