I wanted to post this here also since you diesel guys are always on top of things
"I have a '02 Lariat and never use the overhead console pockets. But one day 3 wks ago when it was quite hot I opened the sunglass bin to check the inside temp of the roof and crack! the tab you push on to open it broke. Now the door will not stay closed.....what a cheap POS.
So I go to the dealer to get a price and they can't find a listing for the part! Anybody else have these break and how was it replaced?"
I have replaced 2 so far under warranty in my 2002. Your parts guys must really be confused??????, if they cannot find the Ford Part Number.
The console just pops out carefully, there are 4 - 1/2inch slots with metal catches that hold it in. If you get it out, the part number is listed on a white sticker with the color (ie: flint for gray)
I keep a spare that I bought from Ford for $42.00, cause I know it is going to break again. I have also complained to Ford about putting this wimpy plastic part in a Ford "Texas Tough" Truck, when the Ford Explorers have metal reinforced compartments, and I have received 3-4 calls back from various Ford "people" and I think they will be addressing the problem.
If your parts guys cannot locate the number then call this Ford Dealer (210)357-1400 ask for parts department, thay might even ship you one.
Well i went to a couple of other dealers in the area and got quoted $73.12 for that POS door! p/n 2C3Z-781-1586-BAB
Hell with that......So can somebody help me out with a elementary way to remove the counsole so i can get the door out and try to fix it myself? Could not locate he 1/2 slots and tabs. Either that or I am going to glue it closed
To remove it you have to carefully apply pressure to all four corners where the corners meet the headliner. It should "unsnap" out of place. If it is hot where you operate the truck, the glue or superglue does not hold for very long.
If you have less than 36K it is covered under warranty.
I have a 2003 and have had to replace two of those pos's I just wish I had know they were under warranty because I only have 20,000 miles . When the next one goes which I'm sure it will I'll go visit my local ford dealer and get it done for free!!!!!
Everytime I fixed one it broke again within 2 weeks due to the heat from the sun. Short of reinforcing it with metal somehow, I would try to get Ford to provide you one at a reduced price. I paid $42 for the entire console, it just snaps out.
When I went to buy it the Parts person said it was under warranty, so the Service advisor filled out a slip, then snapped it in place. (less than 1 minute) I purchased an extra one because you know how Ford is, in 2 years thet will be $100 or 12 weeks to get one. If you really hate the cheap console, save up and buy the one from the Excursion with the LCD screen, it is about $1200(not installed). It is very nice.
