I don't understand why some vehicles have two cats. My only guess is that the engine is bigger and puts out more fumes and you need two cats to clean it.
Also I noticed my dads dodge caravan has two mufflers. One regular factory beside the cat and another smaller one (Looks like a 16" cherry bomb) after that. Is there two mufflers just to make it more quieter?
I feel tempted to cut one of them out and run a straight pipe instead.
For the 2 cats, from what I understand one is like a "pre-cat" and one functions as the regular cat. I think the pre-cat gets up to operating heat quicker to cut start-up emissions down. Stinks for performance though.
I have the 2-muffler system in my other vehicle, and the glasspack like muffler is a resonator, keeps drone down when used with the normal muffler. I'm going to have it removed
F150's with 302's and I beleive 300's and 351's use a 3 way with air system. The 3 way means the first CAT cleans up the NOx and the second CAT deals with CO and HC with air injection infront of it to aide in the reaction. Hope this answers your question.
