I'm going to look at a truck today and I am wondering if there are any physical differences between a 302 and a 351 so I can tell what engine is in the truck. Most of all the trucks I have had has had the FE's in them so I am versed on them but not the Small Blocks. Thanks for any help you can give me with this. Not bad for $600... Hope its a 351 but I will be happy with a 302 as well.
351W is wider than a 302. Depending on what year it is, the intake could have 16 bolts holding it down, 1 extra in each corner over the coolant port. That changed sometime in the mid 70's. Other than the width and the intake on the early engines, they're pretty much the same. Nice 70 there. I used to have an F100 with a GT390 under the hood.

The Guy advertised it as a 1971. Not sure how to tell the difference.

This is an FE engine, either a 360 or 390...FE's have 5 valve cover bolts per side.
The 4th digit of the VIN is the engine code. 1968/72 F100/350: H = 390 2V / Y = 360 2V
351W not available in F150/350 & Bronco until 1981. Not available in any year F100. If you find a F100/350 prior to 1981 w/a 351W, it was swapped in.
302 not available in F250 until 1980, not available in any year F350.
btw: This "1971" has a 1970 grille (someone painted the plastic grille inserts black). It has 8 lug wheels, so it's either an F250 or F350, but probably an F250.

The truck pictured is not the 71 he's going to look at.
Where did the OP state that? Was asked in post #4 if this was the truck in question, but hasn't responded.
In post #1, the OP stated "Thanks for any help you can give on this." I took this to mean the truck the OP pictured.
Not in so many words, but the truck pictured is obviously a 70 with an FE under the hood and he stated that he was familiar with FE's. And as he posted the pics of it, he would have already gone to look at it.
So I went and checked out the truck and Its a 360FE he told me it was a 390 but I wouldn't know unless I measured the stroke. The truck is a lot ruffer than the pictures showed. It might make someone a great driver/work truck but someone did a Rattle Can Paint Job on it and there are only 3 of the good rims on the truck. Bet it would be really hard to find a 4th one. Anyway I didn't buy it. Besides the Wife said its the Truck or Her... DONT SAY IT!!!
