O2 sensor placement

I recently bought new Bosch O2 sensors for my 1997 F150 XLT Supercab 4.6L v8. According to the Bosch website their 15716 was for upstream and the 15718 was for downstream. When I was looking for Bosch sensors for my 2000 Excursion XLT 6.8L v10, the website said their 15716 was for downstream and the 15718 was for upstream.

Why are they reversed? I would think they would be for the same position.

Wire harness length is the only difference.

They have to make their recommendation based on the sensor's installed position relative to where the harness connector is located.

So as far as the sensor itself is concerned it makes no difference whether it's placed upstream or downstream, right?
