At first I thought of getting a new smog pump since my bearing is going out in the present one. I started thinking about deleting it and I know many delete these but I would just prefer to keep the pump in there. I told a mechanic buddy that I was considering removing only the pulley and just getting a shorter belt. He said if I did, it would clog the cat. I told him the cat was gutted by the PO and he said he didn't think I would have a problem. Is this method doable without consequences? I think the belt would have to be about 47". Thanks Sandy
It will not hurt anything but you may want to remove all of the air pump components so you do not have any problems with your state's inspection if they do a visual inspection.

Our state Texas only has a safety inspection for my year 1991. Are you still in Austin? Thanks for the reply.
It could maybe throw the fuel mixture off a little off under some conditions but I would be surprised if you noticed anything in the driver seat. Leave the control solenoids hooked up electrically. If you want to feel better about emissions you can get a modern cat.
If you sell the truck the next owner may have problems depending on where they take the truck.

I'm ok with the gutted cat and don't intend to replace it. Should I still leave the solenoids hooked up? Thanks for your input. Sandy
On my 95 E350 with 7.5L engine, the smog pump locked up and killed the belt. I took off the pulley of the smog pump and used the old belt to measure the new shorter size belt needed. I have no issues over a year and the cat is still working fine too.
I did not take the pump out just left it and the belt clears with plenty of room. I will remove that thing once I figure out how to add a hydro pump so I can remote mount a rear A/C compressor and 2nd alternator. There's just no room inside a E350 van engine bay to add extra items.....
If you remove the solenoids it will throw a code/CEL. The EEC won't realize there is no vacuum present at the solenoid but it will realize the solenoid is not there all together.
Yes I am still in Austin. You are correct there is no emissions test for 1991 MY in Texas. I did leave my solenoids and such in place when I removed my air pump and plumbing and I have no CEL. I went to a place in Marble Falls called "Rowdy Flanagans Muffler Shop" and he custom built a Y-pipe to replace that giant factory cat. He does very nice work and it's a much cleaner look.
Removed the stock belt and smog pulley. I left every thing else as is. I replaced the stock belt with a Gates 47 5/8" . Number KO60470. Fit is great and no cel and NO bearing noise. This was a 15 min job and I am glad I didn't go the total delete route. There is no reason I can see where the total delete is better than a belt swap in my case ,at least at this time. Thanks again to those that responded. Sandy
I've a 47,000 mile pump off a 97 460 I just removed, you can have it for the postage. Looks and spins well. I cleaned up my engine bay. I can SEE the rt bank spark plugs......................
