On my drive home from work tonight my 2000 started sounding louder and then the idle speed started changing along with a miss. It tried to die a couple times then did. I was able to start it and it died 2 more times before I got it to fire and stepped on the gas and managed to keep it going to get home. When cruising at 35 ish my rpms, according to the gauge, would drop to under 1000 then back up to where there are normally. Got it in the driveway and **** it off to cool so i can check fluid levels when it cools enough. Coolant level is good, no related codes came up when i checked and there was no smoke, other than when i mashed the throttle to keep it alive. What should i be looking at first or does anyone have an idea what it could be? It’s been recently overhauled and has a set of full force injectors with 4K on everything probably. It’s been running great till its episode just now.
Before I answer I’d like i start with yes i know better and its on my to fix list. I have not done the hutch or harpoon mod but it is over 3/4 full at the moment. And my other screw up, i dont know the fuel pressure, when I installed my new 4 line feed kit i didnt have the adapter to use my sensor, its sitting in my tool box. The only thing else i can add at this point is my fluid levels are all good and i tried to start it after it sat just for giggles in the driveway and it fired up and idled fine. Hope it last through tomorrow. And yet another short coming i dont have a spare CPS for it so that will hopefully be picked up tomorrow as well. I do now my fuel pressure was good before i messed with everything but that doesnt mean anything at this point.
Take a can of compressed air (keyboard cleaning) with you and if it stalls again turn the can upside and spray the IPR to freeze it. If the truck starts after the freeze treatment, your IPR is failing.
I didn’t even think to check it. Could it being unplugged also cause problems or is that the sensor that when unplugged resorts to default values? I have my HPOP gauge tapped into it with the splitter plug. I’m gonna try to get the fitting tomorrow so I’ll have my fuel pressure gauge back and hopefully the local ford has a cps sensor in stock as well so I’ll have a spare.
Makes sense. I picked up a new CPS from the local dealer but didn’t get a chance to install it before I left. The truck started acting up again when I was driving it the day I got the sensor but never died. I haven’t had a chance to freeze the IPR then to see if it’s the cause. Does anyone else have a recommendation of what I should check out or be prepared to mess with when the time comes?
