Question 94 Explorer 4x4 problem???

Hi, I just bought this suv used 3 days ago with 70k on the new engine. My problem is...

A) When ever I go over a speed bump I hear this creaking like bed springs squeaking and this noise is located in the center of the vehicle. What could this be???

B) When coming to a stop @ about 6mph my car goes from a slowing (low) idle about 1000 rpm then jumps to 1300rpm and then normalizes Is this normal?

Thanks for all of your help.

Does the creaking happen when just the front, rear or both sets of tires go over the speed bump?

The creaking happens as soon as the front tires hit the bump.

Thanks for your reply.

The creaking is most likely cause by the torsion bar bushings. The rear mount points for the torsion bars are roughly under the driver and passanger seats.
The increase in RPM is caused by the trans downshifting from 2nd to 1st. The 4 speed trans is the reason. The gears are a little taller, thus run out a little longer then on the 5 speed trans in the newer X's, so the shifts are more noticable in cases like this. It is normal cause my 92 did it with two different transmissions, the Ford OEM and one built by Jasper. (had to replace it because it wasn't maintained.... never going to do that again) Hope that helps.

I believe 99Xplr is refering to the radius arm bushings as gen 1's don't have torsion bars. The radius arm bushings are a very common cause of this especially the passenger side as the heat from the catalytic converter seems to harden it and cause it to crack and break down. Other possibilites are the shocks or ball joints.

The radius arms are the two arms that connect the front axles to the frame. they mount on the outer ends of the axles and the other end mounts to the frame. the place to grease them is the rubber bushings on the frame mounting point. and remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question.

I just wanted to say thanks I greased them and they are quiet YAY! But there is a kicker LoL. I put my truck up on lifts and found out that the tranny is leaking. It's going in the shop tomorrow but at least one problem is now solved.

Thanks for you help

Glad to hear you lost the creaking.
Sucks about the tranny though.
