I bought this rear end from a guy that had it laying behind his shop. How can I tell what I bought. I payed $125.00 for it. I stopped at the car wash and cleaned some of the grease and build up off the rear end. I was told it came off a 1971 ford ranger truck. We could not tell anything about it since it was covered in build up. What is the gear in this unit
There is what I call a slinger ring behind the yoke on this rear end, and it is tack welded to the yoke is that the norm for these rear ends or did some previous owner do some modifications.
Those slingers are only pressed on. They are common to work loose(been there), so tack welding it is not a big deal. Mine was on the carrier bearing assembly. As you drove it would start to spin, stopping quickly would resonant a whirling sound til the piece stopped turning on the shaft. Annoying.

WDM-S = 9" 3.25-1 Rear Axle with 4 pinion gears, without Limited Slip. Slim Line (tapered roller) differential bearings, large axle bearings.
9LA = Assembled the first week (A) of November (L) 1969 (9), so it would have been installed in a 1970 F100 originally.
Slim Line bearings were introduced in 1970 from serial number J30,001, replacing the ball type differential bearings.
Thank you ND for this information. I am writing it in my manual I am putting together for this truck, so I can keep up with what all I am putting in it. I bought one of these trucks brand new in 1969 and wished I would have not sold it. I am now building my own 1969 to keep and drive here in small town Paris,Tx. Thanks for all your help!
